Nuts
Nuts are indispensable components in any secure fastening system, designed to mate perfectly with bolts, screws, or threaded rods to hold materials together. Working on the principle of friction and compression, they create a reliable and robust joint that can withstand significant forces. From simple assemblies to complex machinery, the right nut ensures stability, prevents loosening, and contributes to the overall integrity of your project.
We offer a comprehensive range of nuts in various styles, materials, and finishes to meet every application's specific demands. Whether you need ultimate vibration resistance, ease of assembly, or a clean aesthetic, our selection provides the ideal solution for your fastening needs.
You'll find nuts universally wherever two or more components need to be held together, from the most intricate electronic devices to massive structural frameworks. They're critical in:
- Construction: Securing steel beams in buildings and bridges, anchoring structures to concrete foundations, and fastening guardrails on railways and highways.
- Automotive & Aerospace: Assembling engine components, chassis and suspension systems, and crucial airframe parts where precision and vibration resistance are paramount.
- Machinery & Industrial Equipment: Holding together conveyor systems, robotics, heavy manufacturing equipment, and agricultural machinery, often in demanding conditions.
- Marine & Offshore: Used extensively in shipbuilding, offshore oil rigs, and marine engines, requiring high corrosion resistance due to saltwater exposure.
- Household & DIY: Common in furniture assembly, appliance repair, and general home improvement projects.
DIN 934 Hex Nuts
These are the most common and versatile type of nut. Recognized by their hexagonal shape, they are used with correspondingly threaded bolts and screws to create strong, general-purpose connections. You'll find DIN 934 hex nuts in almost every industry, from joining steel beams in construction and securing engine components in vehicles to assembling furniture and general machinery. They're available in various materials like steel, stainless steel, and even polymers for applications requiring lightweight or non-conductive properties.
DIN 985 Self-Locking Nuts (Nyloc Nuts)
When a connection absolutely must not loosen due to vibration or dynamic loads, DIN 985 self-locking nuts are the go-to choice. These nuts feature an integrated nylon insert that deforms around the bolt threads, creating friction that resists loosening. They are commonly used in:
- Automotive and Mechanical Engineering: For critical connections in engines, chassis, and moving parts.
- Aerospace: Where vibration resistance is crucial for safety.
- Marine and Offshore Environments: Providing secure, corrosion-resistant fastening.
- Construction and Industrial Machinery: Ensuring long-lasting grip in high-stress applications.
DIN 6923 Flange Nuts
Recognizable by their integrated, non-spinning washer-like flange at the base, DIN 6923 flange nuts offer enhanced load distribution and improved grip. The flange spreads the clamping force over a larger surface area, reducing pressure on the fastened material and often eliminating the need for a separate washer. Some versions also feature serrations on the flange for an even stronger, vibration-resistant lock. Their applications include:
- Automotive and Mechanical Assemblies: Securing bolts where high torque and vibration resistance are needed.
- Industrial Machinery and Equipment: Fastening components efficiently and securely.
- Construction Projects: When vibration resistance and even load distribution are critical.
- Electrical Enclosures: Providing stable and secure connections.
DIN 1587 Cap Nuts (Dome Nuts / Acorn Nuts)
Dome nuts stand out with their distinctive domed top. Beyond their functional role in fastening, they serve a significant aesthetic purpose. They are used to:
- Cover and protect exposed bolt threads: Preventing snagging, injury, or damage to the threads.
- Provide a clean, decorative finish: Commonly seen on furniture, light fixtures, and other applications where appearance is important.
- Protect against sharp edges: Making them ideal for machinery or equipment where exposed threads could pose a hazard.

Frequently Asked Questions
What metal are nuts made of?
Metal nuts are often produced from a wide range of different metals. This can vary from high grade, stainless steel nuts all the way down to cheaper metals like bronze, brass and copper. Each metal material has different properties and you should check that a nut made from that metal will be suitable for your project. For example, cheaper metals are generally less strong, durable and are not resistant to rusting. We prefer to supply only premium quality nuts manufactured from A2 or A4 grades of stainless steel.
What types of metal nuts do you sell?
We are proud to supply our customers with all of the most common styles of metal nuts. These include the DIY essential furniture nuts, in addition to our range of top quality stainless steel nuts. These include the popular styles of wing nuts, t nuts, hex nuts and dome nuts.
What thread sizes are available for metal nuts?
We offer stainless steel nuts in a wide range of metric thread sizes to suit almost any application and project, from M3 all the way up to M36 for some styles. We find that M8 nuts and M10 nuts are in the highest demand among our customers. M12 nuts, M4 nuts, M16 nuts and M14 nuts are also popular thread choices. If you view a style of nut and can't see the thread you need, please contact us as we may still be able to supply it.
Are nuts sold individually or in packs?
All of our nuts are sold individually. This is the same across all of our available styles, from wing nuts, t nuts and hex nuts, to dome nuts, pipe nuts and square nuts. This is also true across stainless steel nuts, nylon, and any other materials used.
What are the advantages of using stainless steel nuts over other materials?
One of the main benefits of manufacturing nuts from stainless steel is the strength that the material provides. Stainless steel nuts will be able to handle significantly higher loads than cheaper materials. As a result of this, they will also offer greater durability and longevity. In addition, the presence of chromium in stainless steel will greatly reduce the effects of rusting and corrosion, even in the harshest of environments. These factors, along with a good temperature resistance and the fact they are non-magnetic, make stainless steels the ideal material for fasteners in most industrial, commercial and engineering projects.
Are stainless steel nuts suitable for marine environments or coastal areas?
Marine and coastal areas are extremely harsh environments for metals, due to the corrosive effects of saltwater. Although A2 stainless steel has a strong resistance to corrosion, it will still become damaged by seawater over time. If you are using stainless steel nuts in a marine or coastal location, you should purchase an A4 grade of stainless steel. This high quality material contains additional molybdenum, which offers increased resistance to salt-induced corrosion. You should also consider a regular cleaning routine to help extend the lifespan of any products exposed to saltwater.
Where are wing nuts used?
Wing nuts are suitable for a large range of applications and this is a testament to the product's popularity. In the UK market, they are often used for assembling garden and outdoor furniture or securing gardening tools. In DIY and home improvement projects, wing nuts provide a quick and easy way to secure fixtures and fasten furniture components. They are a common choice in the Automotive industry, where wing nuts are used in some vehicle components that require frequent adjustment or tightening. Similarly, they are used as a fastener in machinery and equipment where regular adjustments or replacements of components is necessary. Their main advantage is that they are easy to install and remove by hand, and this saves time and effort. Imagine having to regularly remove and retighten lots of hex nuts!
Do wing nuts need washers?
This is a good question and the answer will depend on the specific application that you are applying the wing nuts to, and the materials being used. In general, for heavy duty or critical applications where the wing nut must hold, you should consider using a stainless steel washer underneath it. This will increase the stability of the wing nut, help to prevent loosening and aid with load distribution. All of these are vital factors for ensuring the joint and fixing hold. In addition to this, a washer will help to protect the surface of the object that the wing nut is being tightened against. This may be useful if it is a delicate surface.
What are t nuts used for?
T nuts or Tee nuts and T slot nuts, as they are also known, are commonly used in woodworking and furniture assembly. Within the UK market they are commonly used in DIY projects and woodworking applications to create a strong joint between two wooden parts. They are regularly used to build cabinets, bed frames and other household furniture. We sell both zinc plated steel t nuts and stainless steel t nuts. Stainless steel T nuts are more expensive but the extra strength they provide is useful if you plan on drilling them into hardwoods. They are also recommended for outdoor applications, where they will ensure a long lifespan thanks to their resistance to rust.
What are dome nuts used for?
In the UK market, dome nuts might also be referred to as acorn nuts or cap nuts. These are a popular style of nut and commonly used for both functional and aesthetic purposes. The clean, shiny and rounded appearance of stainless steel dome nuts makes them a pleasing decorative option for finishing a fixing, thread or exposed fastener. They are also effective as protective covers, and can be used to shield exposed bolts and screws. This is useful from a safety perspective, by helping to prevent injuries resulting from contact with sharp threads or fastenings. Stainless steel acorn nuts may also be useful for helping to protect non-corrosion resistant metal fixings and hardware from exposure to outdoor and marine environments.
