Domed Nuts

Dome Nuts, also known as Acorn Nuts or Cap Nuts, are a type of nut which have a rounded head and are only open on one end. This means when fastened the thread is concealed. Dome Nuts come in a few different styles depending on the application. They are commonly used to hide or protect the thread, but can only cover a limited length of thread.

Our customers have frequently found it useful to combine Domed Nuts with Form A Flat Washers and Half Hex Nuts. When a larger length of thread is requried to be covered, a Thread Protection Nut Cap can be combined with a Hex Nut providing protection to the otherwise exposed threads from dirt, damage, corrosion or injury.

Dome Nuts are nuts are available in A2 Stainless Steel (304 Equivalent) and A4 Stainless Steel (316 Equivalent), in sizes from M3 to M36.

When should I use a Dome Nut?

A Dome Nut can be used over a standard hex nut when an aesthetic finish is required. Dome and Cap Nuts hide the thread, which can be important during some assemblies where appearance matters, such are automotive or furniture. Hiding the thread also has the benefit of being safer than a standard nut by reducing the risk of cuts or scratches. Dome Nuts will also protect the thread from external damage from dirt, moisture and physical impact. For Sanitary applications in food assembly lines or wash down rooms a Hygienic Cap Nuts can be used, which come with a rubber seal and have a smooth self draining design.

What is another name for a Cap Nut?

Cap Nuts can be refered to as Capped Nuts, Acorn Nuts, Dome Nuts, Crown Nuts or Blind Nuts. However, these names can also refer to different types of nuts. For example, a Dome or Acorn Nut commonly refers to a DIN 1587 Nut, as this closely resembles an Acorn. A Cap Nut often refers to a DIN 917 Nut, and is size and shape to a standard Hex Nut with one end capped. A Crown Nut can refer to both a DIN 1587 Dome Nut and a DIN 985 Castle Nut, as they both resemble the crowns of chess pieces, however a Castle Nut is not a type of Cap Nut.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are domed nuts?

Domed nuts are a popular fastening option that is commonly used across the UK markets. They are valued for their aesthetic appeal and ability to enclose an exposed thread. The base of a domed nut is similar to a standard hex nut, but it features a rounded, dome shaped top half. The domed nut's base and domed top are made from one piece of metal. The domed shape of the nut had led to many people commonly describing them as domed nuts. It is also popular to refer to them as acorn nuts, again due to their shape, which resembles that of an acorn nut from an oak tree.

What are the advantages of using domed nuts?

There are several key advantages to using domed nuts on an application. The primary is the ability to cover exposed ends of threads. This can be important when considering safety implications, as exposed metal threads can cause damage to objects that they come into contact with. In terms of health and safety, it may also be important to cover them in case of human contact with the sharp exposed edges. A domed nut will generally be constructed from a shiny, polished metal and this also provides a decorative finish to an application. For this reason you will commonly see them used in furniture assembly or architectural elements in large structures. Additionally, stainless steel domed nuts provide a good level of protection to the thread they are applied to. We sell stainless steel acorn nuts in both M2 and M4 grades of stainless steel and these will help to protect the thread that they are placed on from corrosion. M4 or marine grade domed nuts can even be used in harsh industrial or coastal environments and will continue to perform well for long periods with minimal corrosion.

What are acorn nuts and domed nuts also known as?

Domed nuts are commonly known as acorn nuts due to their distinctive shape. They might also be called cap nuts, due to the role they play in covering exposed threads and nuts. Dome head nuts is another popular term for the product. Some less often used terms include crown nuts, blind nuts and top nuts. We describe our product range as stainless steel domed nuts, to emphasise that they are constructed from the highest quality grade of materials. Finally, the more technically minded consumer may use a DIN number to describe the domed nuts. For our range of stainless steel acorn nuts, this would be din1587.

What thread sizes of dome head nuts do you offer?

We stock dome nuts in metric thread sizes ranging from M3 all the way up to M36. However, if you need a size that isn't listed or require non-metric sizes, please contact us as we can supply additional dimensions. Our top selling domed nuts are the m6 dome nut and m8 dome nut. Customers also often purchase m10 dome nuts and m12 dome nuts for their projects. Other trending thread sizes include m4 dome nuts, m5 dome nuts and m16 dome nuts.

Do you sell black dome nuts?

For applications where our customers desire a darkened finish on their stainless steel domed nuts, we are pleased to offer a unique variety of black dome nuts and black acorn nuts. These dome head nuts are chemically treated to add a permanent black colour to the dome nuts. Please note that due to the costs involved with this specialist service, it is only available with a minimum order quantity. For more information please enquire using our contact us page.

What is the difference between a dome nut and a cap nut?

The differences here lie in the categorisation of fastener products and both terms will generally be used to refer to the same product - domed hex nuts. A cap nut is technically a sub-category range of nuts that may feature a few different shapes such as domed, hexagonal or cylindrical. However, a dome nut refers specifically to domed nuts, with their distinctive acorn shape. The most important thing to remember is that both terms are used to describe essentially the same product. A dome nut is a type of cap nut and they are both most commonly used for covering and protecting exposed bolts, nuts, threads and rods.
