Generally it isn't necessary to use washers with stainless steel wing nuts to achieve their primary function of hand-tightened, tool free fastening. However, there are some situations where using a washer under the wing nuts could be beneficial. Washers can be useful when fastening wing nuts onto soft materials such as woods or plastics. The washer can act as a buffer and reduce the risk of the material being crushed or damaged when strongly tightening a wing nut against it. Washers will also provide increased stability of the thread and distribute the load more evenly which may also help to protect the condition of softer surfaces.

Stainless steel wing nuts are a popular and hand tightened fastening solution, but they have a few limitations when compared to hex nuts. As wing nuts are usually tightened by hand, they will generally have a limited torque capacity when compared to a hex nut tightened by a wrench. This means they will not be tightened as strongly. They will also generally not handle high load capacities as well as hex nuts, due to their differing shape and the wings of the nut reducing the overall bearing surface. The biggest drawback of using wing nuts comes from the fact that they are easier to loosen than hex nuts. This is generally one of their key benefits as it allows for faster installation and removal, with less effort than nuts that require the use of tools. However, in applications that contain vibrations it is possible that wing nuts will become loosened and unsecured during operation. It is important to keep these limitations in mind when selecting the right type of nut for your fastening project.
