Our plastic wing nuts are built from a durable, long lasting nylon 6/6 and our metal offering consists of premium stainless steel wing nuts. We also sell locking wing nuts, these are available in nylon 6/6 and can be purchased as black wing nuts or white wing nuts. If customers are looking for a stronger fastener with increased torque and durability, we also provide heavy duty wing nuts.
Do you sell m6 wing nuts?
Yes, m6 wing nuts are our best selling size of wing nuts, closely followed by m8 wing nuts. Customers find these thread sizes the most useful for a range of different applications, ranging from DIY to industrial or commercial uses. M10 wing nuts and m4 wing nuts are also popular sizes for this product range.
What are wing nuts also known as?
Wing nuts might also be referred to as butterfly nuts or winged nuts, due to their distinctive shape resembling that of a butterfly's wings. Customers looking for metal wing nuts might also consider our stainless wing nuts or ss wing nuts, as these provide excellent lifespan and reusability, even in harsh outdoor conditions. Finally, our stainless steel wing nuts are available in both A2 and A4 grades, with the marine grade offering enhanced resistance to corrosion. These are suitable for applications that may involve contact with seawater.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where are wing nuts used?
Wing nuts are a popular fastening product and are used widely in the UK market across a variety of applications. You will see wing nuts used commonly used in the assembly of furniture and outdoor furniture and equipment. They are also a popular choice for DIY projects and handy for all manner of home repairs and domestic projects. The appeal of wing nuts also extends to the commercial sectors, with wing nuts commonly being used to fasten industrial machinery and equipment. Additionally, wing nuts are an excellent choice for any project that requires a temporary fastening application. There are several key advantages of wing nuts that make them ideal for these applications. The primary advantages of using wing nuts stems from the fact they as a nut that can be hand tightened without the use of any tools. This allows for fast and easy installation and removal, which is ideal for saving time in applications with small, non-critical loads. They are also a perfect fastener to use when the application will require frequent adjustment, reconfiguration or disassembly - again saving time and effort, when compared to other nuts that require tools to install.
Are wing nuts the same as butterfly nuts?
Although wing nuts is the most common way of describing this fastening product, they are also commonly referred to as butterfly nuts. This is due to the shape of the nuts which loosely resembles a butterfly with its wings open. Customers might also call them stainless steel wing nuts and stainless wing nuts as this high grade of material adds corrosion resistance, making outdoor applications possible. Some customers may also use the DIN standard to refer to wing nuts, which is din315 for our range of stainless steel wing nuts.
What styles of wing nuts do you sell?
Our most popular style of wing nuts are our premium grade of stainless steel wing nuts, these are available in both A2 and A4 grades, ensuring long lasting durability even in harsh outdoor conditions. We also supply plastic wing nuts, these are made from a durable nylon 6/6 material and are also available in a locking wing nut style that include a nylon insert in their thread. Additionally we sell a range of thermoplastic wing nuts that utilise a brass thread.
What thread sizes of wing nuts do you offer?
We are proud to offer a wide range of wing nuts with metric thread sizes ranging from M3 up to M20. We sell all sizes of wing nuts that are commonly requested by our customers, including the popular m6 wing nuts and m8 wing nuts. Other top sellers for our offering of butterfly nuts includes m10 wing nuts and m4 wing nuts. If you require a non-metric size of nut or another size that isn't listed please message us on our contact us page.
Do wing nuts need washers?
Generally it isn't necessary to use washers with stainless steel wing nuts to achieve their primary function of hand-tightened, tool free fastening. However, there are some situations where using a washer under the wing nuts could be beneficial. Washers can be useful when fastening wing nuts onto soft materials such as woods or plastics. The washer can act as a buffer and reduce the risk of the material being crushed or damaged when strongly tightening a wing nut against it. Washers will also provide increased stability of the thread and distribute the load more evenly which may also help to protect the condition of softer surfaces.
What are the disadvantages of wing nuts?
Stainless steel wing nuts are a popular and hand tightened fastening solution, but they have a few limitations when compared to hex nuts. As wing nuts are usually tightened by hand, they will generally have a limited torque capacity when compared to a hex nut tightened by a wrench. This means they will not be tightened as strongly. They will also generally not handle high load capacities as well as hex nuts, due to their differing shape and the wings of the nut reducing the overall bearing surface. The biggest drawback of using wing nuts comes from the fact that they are easier to loosen than hex nuts. This is generally one of their key benefits as it allows for faster installation and removal, with less effort than nuts that require the use of tools. However, in applications that contain vibrations it is possible that wing nuts will become loosened and unsecured during operation. It is important to keep these limitations in mind when selecting the right type of nut for your fastening project.
